WordPress Content Export to XML Fails

Issue: When users attempt to use the export feature within WordPress:

Dashboard >> Tools >> Export

After selecting options, and the using the “Download Export File” feature, they are presented with an on-screen message advising:

No Results Found
The page you requested could not be found. Try refining your search, or use the navigation above to locate the post.

In many cases, WordPress needs to search through posts, page, etc. ownership (authors). Many website have .htaccess directives to prevent author scanning. These .htaccess directives are a common solution found online (where visitors can copy & paste such code into their own .htaccess files).

Solution: Check the .htaccess file (usually found within the website’s root directory); look for the following:

# BEGIN block author scans
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (author=\d+) [NC]
RewriteRule .* – [F]
# END block author scans

Change it (comment out directives) to:

# BEGIN block author scans
# RewriteEngine On
# RewriteBase /
# RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (author=\d+) [NC]
# RewriteRule .* – [F]
# END block author scans

Then complete the export process, and return the directives (back to the original) so as to help curtail author scanning afterwards.
