In the world of headline writing, there are no rules. No specific formulas. No surefire ways of creating a title that gets read.
Well, not exactly…
We all know how important headlines are to the success of our blog posts. The problem is, it’s hard to write one that sounds natural and doesn’t sound like it was ripped straight off clickbait or something similar.
There’s no magic formula when it comes to crafting great headlines. But there are a few things we can do to make the process easier and increase our chances of writing something that’ll grab attention and get people clicking.
When I was working on this post, I spent 5 minutes searching for headlines about “headlines” in Google and came up with the example list above.
I didn’t do it to be evil, but I’m pretty sure you now have some idea of what people are doing on the Internet these days…
It’s important that you write better headlines for your blog posts. And not just “better” clickbait titles that work .
The difference? Clickbait titles are everywhere online. They’re fun to read and they can do a great job of driving traffic back to your blog. But people filter out the noise as soon as it gets annoying, which is why you need to avoid using those tactics (clickbait) for every post.
I’m not talking about crafting an attention-grabbing headline, like “This Is How You Can Squeeze Six Pack Abs Out Of Your Belly”..
The truth is if your blog isn’t authority-based (you have no reputation, no authority and no connections), your blog post title is going to have a very small chance of being clicked on…
…even if it’s a clickbait title – one that people would normally be tempted to click on. That’s just the way the Internet works, so don’t waste your time trying to make it work the “wrong” way.
The headline you write for your blog post is going to determine if anyone is going to read it or not.
If you’ve spent time writing a great article with useful information, don’t blow it by writing a crappy headline that doesn’t tell people what the article is about or why they should click on it.
Be smart and be strategic. Write a title that’s going to spark interest and get people clicking.

I cringe when I read articles from my blog contributions from the early 2000’s or so, because all of the titles have clickbait titles that scream things like “You’ll Never Believe What Happened Next!”…
But there’s a reason why most top bloggers stick to certain types of headlines – they work better.
So if you’re looking to create great headlines that are going to get people reading what you have to write, then it’s time you start paying more attention to how they read your blog titles.

There are 3 guidelines I recommend you follow when using clickbait titles:
- They’re not clickbait! So, you’ll see that each of these titles promise valuable information. They clearly lay out the gist of the content.
- They still give people an idea of what to expect without giving away too much. If your new blog visitors click the link and then leave right away, at least you know that they didn’t like what you had to say or if they stayed on your site it means that they found value.
- They don’t overdo it. That means no caps lock, no excessive punctuation, not including annoying words like shocking, unbelievable, or epic, and so on.
You might be wondering what the best strategy is if you want to start using clickbait titles for your blog posts?
I recommend that you find a balance between writing headlines that get people interested enough to read your blog post and do some research about how other bloggers write their titles.
Don’t just aim for clickbait titles – instead, go for something that has just enough excitement to make people curious about what you have to say.
As with anything in blogging, the key is to do your research and test out different types of headlines until you find one that works best for your blog posts.
Above all, don’t be afraid to try using clickbait titles (in moderation) and track the results to make sure it works for you.

Again… If it’s attractive, appealing, and works fast, it will help with your ranking.
Your blog MUST be mobile friendly! First.

When I share my blog posts on social media, people that like reading them, click through, and then they become part of my readership.
It can help other people learn about things that will be interesting to them (I know because sometimes we accidentally find out about things we didn’t know about before).
